A girl named Heidi lives in a town of Nevada with her mentally-disabled mother and their neighbor, Bernadette, also known as Bernie. Bernadette has this condition called agoraphobia. Agoraphobia is a condition where the sufferer becomes anxious in environments that are unfamiliar. This causes her to be too afraid to go outside her house. Even though Heidi's mother has a mental disability, Bernie finally teaches Heidi's mother how to open cans. Heidi’s mother only knows 23 words including one mysterious word, “soof,” that no one can define even Heidi's mother is unable define it. She's also unable to take care of herself and her daughter. However, Heidi does know her mother loves her and that she has an incredible streak of good luck. Everything she tries, she succeeds, whether playing a memory game or using the slot machines to make extra money for the family.
Heidi finally asks Bernie how she even ended up at her apartment. Heidi's mother was able to tell Bernadette that her baby's name was Heidi. Bernie couldn’t just leave them on the streets so she eventually took them in. When Bernie asked for Heidi's mother's own name, Heidi's mother says, "So be it." Since Bernadette believes everyone should have a middle name, she was called “So B. It.” Heidi was known as “Heidi It.” Heidi knows nothing about her mother’s life, except her alien name, or anything about her father. The truth about her mother's identity eats away at Heidi. She simply cannot rest until she puts together her mother's past. Why was her mother terrified of buses? Why do rainy days make her anxious? When Heidi finds some old photos of her mother at a Christmas party held at Hilltop Home in Liberty, New York, she decides she must travel there alone in order to discover who her mother truly is. She will have some problems along the way to her destination. Will she able to find her answers? What will happen to her if she gets caught traveling alone? Read to find out!
So B. It by Sarah Weeks is a great book to read. The mystery is so interesting and it feels like you can never put the book down. I recommend this book to all ages that can read and understand this book.
